Hai Tomb (in simplified Chinese海瑞墓) is one of the key units to be protected by the country. The tomb was initially constructed before the Ming Dynasty in 1589, under the order of the Emperor. According to a traditional rumor, after Hai Rui’s death, his coffin fell down at a piece of ground during the transportation. Thus, people thought that it was Hai Rui’s decision to be buried in this piece of ground and therefore, people decided to build the tomb at the place, which is the place now we call the Hai Tomb.

Hai Rui (1514 – 1587), was born in Qiongshan Jinhua City Town Village. He was not born in a very rich family, but he worked very hard and joined the examination and was selected for being an official in a small town. During his term, he worked hard to provide a lot of good condition for the people living in that town. He introduced a lot of beneficial policies and won the support of the citizens. Of course, he did not just follow the wish of the citizens. He would just do the things that he thinks citizens would be benefited and on the other hand the country would not be harmed. Therefore, he was later promoted to work in the central government.

During his term as officials in the central government, he tried to do everything that would help the Emperor. However, the Emperor sometimes did not listen to the advice of Hai and even thought Hai’s words as not respecting him. Therefore, Hai was laid off and was sent back to his home.

This is actually just one of the cases of a very hard-working officials being treated badly in history of China. In fact, there are a lot more officials being killed or laid off just because they made some reasonable but hard-to-accept advices to the Emperor.

In fact, in this Tomb, it was more than a tomb. There are a lot of beautiful trees and flowers planted here and you would be able to see a lot of relaxing scenery. These flowers are like accompanying Hai. If you would like to pay respect to this good official, you could try to visit this tomb.
