Hainan Province (in simplified Chinese 海南省) is the province in China which has the largest area of ocean. Hainan is having a tropical maritime monsoon climate, with annual temperature less than 15 degrees Celsius. January and February would be the months with coldest weather, which is just about 16 to 21 degrees Celsius. In July and August, it would be the hottest months, with about 25 to 29 degrees Celsius. Besides the mountains in the central part of the Province, the daily average temperature was over 10 degrees Celsius.

The eastern part of Hainan Island is a location where many typhoons would pass by, and more than 70% of annual rainfall in Hainan Province actually comes from the summer rainy season and typhoons.

In fact, in the past, Hainan was just part of the Guangdong Province. Later, due to the need for a faster economic development, Hainan was upgraded to a Province. Now, Hainan is one of the economic zones in China and it is also the largest economic zone.

Talking about the hygienic condition of Hainan, both criticisms and praises come. The rat problem in Hainan was once very serious that schools had to be closed in order to let workers sanitize the places. However, on the other hand, it was the only province with no SARS cases found during the worldwide spread of the disease. Therefore, it is clear that Hainan has a room of improvement but it is doing better and better nowadays compared with the past.

According to a sample survey of population, the province’s total population at the end of 2001 was 7,955,500. The birth rate was 15.23 ‰, the mortality rate was 5.76 ‰, and the natural growth rate was 9.47 ‰. Household population of the province in 2001 was 7,695,000. Of these, 4,037,100 were men and women were 3,657,900 in number. Non-agricultural population was about 2,023,100 people, while 5,671,900 people made up the farming population.

Therefore, Hainan is a developing province in China. In the future, it is expected that more and more people would shift from farming to tertiary or secondary sectors.
