Ends of the Earth Scenic Area (in simplified Chinese 天涯海角风景区) is a very famous and popular tourist spot in Hainan and it is listed as “Must Visit” in many tourist books. If you travel westbound of Sanya City for 26 kilometers along the coastal foreshore, you can reach a Ma Mountain and after reaching the foot of this mountain, you would be able to see the great view of “the ends of the earth corner”. When visitors arrive at this, it seems that they have reached the end of the world. Of course, this is just a geographical sense.

In ancient time, traffic was not convenient. Some people described the distance from Beijing to this area as “Half a year in terms of the speed of bird”. Therefore, it was really very like the end of the world. Actually, when you arrive at there, you would discover that you would find no way to move forward, and you could just see a large area of sea. And some ancient poets said that when reaching this corner, they would sigh that they have reached the end of the world.

Of course, besides the geographical sense, there is something which contributes to the name of this corner. There was a traditional love story, saying that there was a couple who come from two opposition families. Yes, it is just like Romeo and Juliet. But the ending is different. In this Chinese story, the couple ran to this corner, and they jumped into the sea and died. Therefore, this place was one of the attractions for tourist couples. They would go to this area, and vow that they would not leave each other forever. Some might even mark something like “I love you forever” on the rocks in this area, but of course, such action is definitely not encouraged.

If you are in love, you could try to go to this place with your partner, and make the vow. It actually would be quite romantic because the view is quite beautiful. Just imagine that you and your wife/husband sitting in this area, watching the sunset. Romantic!
